Festival overview

The goals of the Festival are to bring people together to have fun, learn something, and protect our planet. Generous businesses and individuals are sponsoring the Festival so it can be free for the general public and participating non-profit and governmental organizations. If revenues exceed expenses, Sustainable Practice (the business presenting the Festival) will share 99% of the profits with participating organizations who provide fun activities and help promote the event.

The Festival will be indoors and outdoors, rain or shine, from 10 am to 3 pm at Harriet Beecher Elementary School in Brunswick. Participating organizations can choose to be indoors and have a table and chair provided for them, or outdoors and bring their own table, chairs, and tent.

This is the first year for the Festival. Our stretch goal is 1,000 attendees. We are asking all participating organizations to help promote the event to make it successful for everyone. We'll apply what we learn this year to the Festival in 2027 and 2028.

Three related events

The Festival is the hub for three events to celebrate on the Saturday after Earth Day:

  1. Pop-up Farmers Market: 9 am to Noon (rain or shine)
  2. Festival: 10 am to 3 pm (rain or shine)
  3. Brunswick Coastal Clean Up: 12 pm to 2 pm (rain date Sunday, April 26th)

Festival schedule

Tabling and indoor fun activities will be happening in the gym. Free talks and presentations will be happening in the cafeteria. Outdoor fun activities will be happening on the school grounds, including the school garden.

  • 10:00 am — Opening Bell
  • 10:05 am — Talk by Kelly Punch of Mere Point Oyster Co about the 5th Annual Brunswick Coastal Clean Up, the largest Earth Day volunteer event in the Brunswick area
  • 10:30 am — All Species Parade
  • 11:30 am — Nature Hike
  • 1:00 pm — Fun Bike Ride
  • 2:30 pm — Recap and Races
  • 3:00 pm — Closing Bell

Additional talks will be scheduled. If you'd like to be considered as a speaker or presenter, please email Fred at fred@sustainablepractice.life by March 30.

Wheelbarrow Races — Time trials run from 10 am to 2 pm. Racers with the best times will compete in the finals during "Recap and Races" at 2:30.

Bike Tent — The Bicycle Coalition of Maine will be offering safety checks, basic tune ups, and simple repairs for anyone who has a bike they want someone to take a look at.

Cycling Show and Tell — A cycling show and tell will be happening all day where cycling enthusiasts can show their bikes and gear and answer questions about cycling in the greater Brunswick area.

EV Show and Tell — An electric vehicle show and tell will be happening all day where EV drivers can show their vehicles and answer questions about driving 100% battery-powered vehicles in Maine.

Music and Dancing — Volunteer musicians will be playing outdoors under the pavilion near the playground.

Set up

On April 20 each participating organization will receive by email a Festival Packet that includes a map of the venue and the location of your table or tent space. Volunteers will be setting up tables and chairs in the gym on Friday evening, April 24, and marking tent spaces. Starting at 7:30 am or so on Saturday, April 25, you can begin setting up. If you are setting up indoors a six-foot table with no draping and two chairs will be provided for you. If you are setting up outdoors, no table, chairs, or tent will be provided. Tents will need to be held down by cinderblocks or milk jugs, not by stakes.

Take down

The Festival will end at 3 pm. Take down and pack up must be completed by 5 pm.

Festival Program ads

All participating organizations will receive a free "Find us at the Festival" listing in the Festival Program. You can upgrade to a half page ad (5" wide x 4" tall) for $50 or a full page ad (5" wide x 8" tall) for $100. Ads will run in the Festival Program and for one year in the Earth Day Every Day Resource Guide.

More information

An April Packet with updated information will be sent out the first week of April, and a Festival Packet with a map of the venue and more details will be sent on April 20.
